The first American truck was made in 1898 in a little shop in Brooklyn, New York. By 1914, it was a commercial success. Shipping by truck revolutionized how produce was transported to market and created a boom for the nations highways. From the oil fields of Texas to the cities of the Northeast, commercial trucking proved to be one of the greatest means of transportation.Mexico

In this lesson, students will view online newspapers and follow the permalinks embedded in each PowerPoint slide to learn about Texas truck farming and its importance for trade and economic development in Texas.

Students will learn the vocabulary using the "Text the Word" activity. They will also use the "Truck Farming" and "123 of Truck Farming" worksheets to guide their exploration. To conclude the lesson, they will engage in a final class discussion to understand the full implications of truck farming in Texas.
