OVERVIEW
In this lesson, students will analyze three primary source excerpts about the Great Depression’s effect on Beaumont to make observations, inferences, and predictions about the next unit.
LESSON TIME
This lesson will take approximately 45 - 60 minutes.
Exact times may vary based on the specific needs of individual classes.
ESSENTIAL QUESTION
- What major event occurred in the U.S. on October 29, 1939, and what effect did it have on the majority of Americans? How did this event shape the defining characteristics of the next era during the Great Depression?

Warm-up & Exit Ticket
In this printable warm-up / bell-ringer activity, students will view a line graph of unemployment rates from 1905 to 1935. They make observations about the data, and predictions about what they believe they are likely to see in the next unit, the Great Depression, based on the data.
In this exit ticket, students will use two sentence stems to respond to a prompt asking them to compare the defining characteristics of the Age of Oil to the Great Depression.
The Warm-up and Exit Ticket document includes two warm-ups on the front of the page and two exit tickets on the back of the page. This formatting reduces the number of copies needed, as teachers will cut each printed page in half. Each student will receive a half-page with the warm-up on the front and the exit on the back.
