OVERVIEW
In this lesson, students will analyze the advantages of horizontal drilling, explain the social and economic effects it has had in Texas, and write a short composition explaining my findings.
LESSON TIME
This lesson will take approximately 45 – 60 minutes Exact times may vary based on the specific needs of individual classes.
ESSENTIAL QUESTION
- What is horizontal drilling, how has it revolutionized the oil industry, and what effects has this technology had on Texas?

This ready-to-use classroom slideshow contains the warm-up exercise, the daily objective, the “We will / I will” statements, and the essential question for the lesson.

Warm-up & Exit Ticket
In this printable warm-up / bell-ringer activity, students will Students observe a simple diagram of a conventional oil drilling rig and make assertions about potential disadvantages of the technology. Students then invent their own oil rig design to address the disadvantages they noted of the conventional wells.
In this exit ticket, students will use a map of five oil and natural gas formations in Texas and determine in which region or regions each formation is located.
The Warm-up and Exit Ticket document includes two warm-ups on the front of the page and two exit tickets on the back of the page. This formatting reduces the number of copies needed, as teachers will cut each printed page in half. Each student will receive a half-page with the warm-up on the front and the exit on the back.
