Description
OVERVIEW
In this lesson, students will identify the key challenges facing farmers in Texas in the late 19th century and examine how farmers attempted to address their concerns by completing their guided notes worksheets.
LESSON TIME
This lesson will take approximately 45 – 60 minutes.
Exact times may vary based on the specific needs of individual classes.

Warm-up & Exit Ticket
In this printable warm-up / bell-ringer activity, students will analyze a primary source excerpt of a speech given by T. B. King of the Farmer’s Alliance at a Fourth of July Celebration discussing his opinion on the role of farmers in politics. Students will make a claim about the author’s point of view based on evidence from the passage.
In this exit ticket, students will Students read a secondary source excerpt from “Gone to Texas” by Randolph Campbell discussing a summary of the Populist Party and its significance to Texas history.
Students will make a list of three things they can learn about the Populist Party based on the excerpt.
The Warm-up and Exit Ticket document includes two warm-ups on the front of the page and two exit tickets on the back of the page. This formatting reduces the number of copies needed, as teachers will cut each printed page in half. Each student will receive a half-page with the warm-up on the front and the exit on the back.
